In Memoriam

In Memory of Prof. Plinio Rossi (1929 - 2025)

Prof. Plinio Rossi passed away on September 14, 2025. Today we remember with deep respect and gratitude Professor Plinio Rossi, a pioneering radiologist, one of the founding fathers of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), and President of the Society from 1994 to 1997.

Professor Rossi devoted his career to advancing abdominal imaging and was among the first to establish interventional radiology in Italy. His vision and leadership at ESGAR strengthened the Society’s role as a hub for education, innovation, and collaboration across Europe, setting standards that continue to guide our field.

Beyond his professional achievements, he will be remembered as a generous teacher and mentor who inspired countless colleagues and students. His legacy lives on in the many radiologists he guided, in the institutions he helped shape, and in the countless patients whose care was improved by his work.

We honour Professor Rossi not only for his scientific contributions but also for his humanity, dedication, and enduring impact on our community. His example will continue to light the way for future generations.

ESGAR extends its sincere condolences to Professor Rossi’s family.

*********************************************************

We have lost a great, wonderful friend: Plinio Rossi, founding member of our Society and President of the unforgettable 1994 Annual Meeting in Taormina, Italy. As a strong personality he was - I am quoting him - a «wave-breaker and road-opener», he «opened the windows and let fresh air come in» to create a well-structured Society. The meeting in Taormina was the first one of a long series of successful meetings, with a considerable participation of junior doctors involved in gastrointestinal and abdominal imaging and interventions. Dear Plinio, we will not only greatly miss your wise advice but also your warmth and your stories.
