ESGAR: Rising Star Award

Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award recognises promising young abdominal radiology researchers. The award is intended to support individuals who are still at an early stage of building their independent research profile and can serve as a stepping stone to further scientific development, engagement within ESGAR, and visibility in abdominal radiology.

Selected Rising Stars will receive their award at the ESGAR Annual Meeting.

The Rising Star status includes the following benefits:

Free registration for the Annual Meeting 2028
Grant of EUR 1,000
Participation in the Award Ceremony during the Annual Meeting
Presentation of his/her research work during a lecture session at the Annual Meeting

We thank the members of the Parnassus Circle for generously supporting this ESGAR initiative. Grants are made available by private donations from former ESGAR Presidents and Founding Members.

Application for 2028 Rising Stars will open in April 2027.

Candidates for the Rising Star Award must:

Be ESGAR members in good standing for at least two years (and preferably also be a member of the Young ESGAR network).
Be senior residents or radiologists within 5 years after completion of training.
Demonstrate engagement with ESGAR, through participation in ESGAR annual meetings and/ or workshops as a delegate, presenter, or (junior) faculty member.
Demonstrate an emerging track record in abdominal imaging research, including at least 1 publication as first author in a Q1-ranked journal.
Have their main residence and workplace in Europe.

The award is intended for candidates who are in the process of developing their scientific profile and independence. An extensive publication record, major grant portfolio, established international reputation, or longstanding ESGAR faculty role is not expected.

Senior members (not including Young ESGAR representatives) of the ESGAR executive committee, Research committee, Educational committee, Workshop committee, Membership committee, or EDGAR diploma committee are not eligible to apply for the rising star award.

The selection committee will consider achievements in relation to career stage, with particular emphasis on scientific potential, career trajectory, and the extent to which receiving the award could contribute to the candidate’s further development.

Candidates may either self-nominate or be nominated by another ESGAR member.  

Self-nomination:
Applicants must submit the following documents.

A summary curriculum vitae (use of this template is mandatory).

A short letter of motivation (max. 1 page), briefly explaining the following:
1) why they should receive the award
2) what the award would mean for their career,
3) their future professional goals

A letter of support from a National Radiology Society Committee member or their institutional Head of Department.

Nomination by another member:
The nominator and nominee must jointly submit the following documents.

From the nominator:
o A short letter of motivation (max. 1 page) explaining why the nominee deserves the award

From the nominee: 
o A summary curriculum vitae (use of this template is mandatory).
o A short letter of motivation (max. 1 page), briefly explaining the following:
1) what the award would mean for their career,
2) their future professional goals

The recipient will be selected by the ESGAR Executive Committee based on the recommendation of the Research Committee.

Selection will be based on the candidate’s scientific potential and trajectory, considering research activities, engagement with ESGAR, motivation and future plans, as well as the potential added value of the award at the candidate’s current career stage.

Rating:

Reviewers will be asked to rate candidates according to the following criteria. The ratings are intended to provide a structured framework and guide the discussion within the Research Committee. They will inform the selection process but will not serve as the sole basis for the final decision.

Emerging scientific track record and trajectory (CV) – up to 5 points

Quality and promise of scientific work, including publications, presentations and other research activities

Evidence of increasing responsibility and developing scientific independence

Engagement with ESGAR – up to 5 points

Participation and contribution to ESGAR activities (annual meeting, workshops)

Membership of and involvement in Young ESGAR activities

Future potential and added value of the award – up to 10 points

Clarity and ambition of future research and professional goals

Potential to develop further within abdominal imaging research

Potential for further engagement within the Society (e.g. as a committee or faculty member)

Extent to which recognition as an ESGAR Rising Star could meaningfully support the candidate’s next career steps

Total: up to 20 points
